Help a Family after Hurricane Sandy
November 4th, 2012 by Roxanne | Filed under Holistic Lifestyle.
It is really unbelievable what hurricane Sandy has done to communities on the East Coast. Long Beach, NY was among many of the communities that have been destroyed by flooding and storm surges. Looking at the pictures of what Long Beach looks like today breaks my heart. Growing up on Long Island, I spent a lot of time on the beach in Long Beach and it is heart breaking to see it destroyed. For those who lived there it must be a horrible feeling to see the destruction that has occurred.
Looking at pictures, reading articles, and looking through the facebook status messages from people affected by the storm made me want to do something to help. It’s hard to see such horror and not be able to volunteer to help or bring things to those who need them since I am far away. I wanted to find a way to help families in need directly instead of donating to a large organization because I will never know what happened to the money I helped to raise. In searching for something to do to help I found GoFundMe.com which allows you to raise money for people who need it so that the family in need will get all of the money (minus some small processing fees).
This is one of the families I want to help…
Erica and Chris Milone left their home in Long Beach, NY along with their dog Sasha, when they heard of the mandatory evacuation due to hurricane Sandy’s path. After the storm they returned to find their one story home destroyed by 2-3 feet of flood water from the ocean. Everything they owned has been destroyed.
They are now working to rebuild so they can have a place to call home when they welcome their first child into the world in February 2013.
All the contents of their home were put out on the curb and they now have to start from scratch. This is a way to help a growing family rebuild their home. Please take a moment to donate to this family even if it is only a few dollars every little bit helps.

Actually most of the money sent to the Red Cross goes to relief, the only other one that spends more on relief and less on salary is the Salvation Army. The head of the SA gets $13,000 a year last I heard.
I should say salary and administrative costs.
That is very good to know. Since I don’t know a lot about that stuff I felt better doing it this way. Glad to hear that they will be helping though!!
the red cross has done nothing for staten island. took them too long to get here and they arent giving the supplies out like they should, they are parked too far up from the beach. staten islanders are taking better care of their own
Our church is collecting for Samaritan’s Purse. Franklin Graham’s ministry that also does Operation Shoebox.
Lauren, I’m sorry that is happening, however even the Red Cross has to obey Federal Laws. They can only set up in certain places, and distribute a certain way. They cannot go in without permission, from Federal and then State governments. To give you an example, feminine products still in the package cannot be anywhere near, in fact need to be in a separate room, food items, even canned goods. Our Federal government at work.
We also gave to The Red Cross. When a good friend had a house fire a year ago they were so awesome. Gave them vouchers for local restaurants to buy food, gift cards to Wal-Mart so they could buy clothing (mostly socks & undies, all they had was the clothes on their back)…they were very kind. And they were very quick, the fire happened around 8am and the Red Cross was here by afternoon.
awesome! i’ve wanted to try and go around the big companies too. Salvation Army is always there and Samaritan’s Purse (by Franklin Graham) are good too!

I was wondering what happened to the dog? Maybe the lack of sleep is getting to me but as I read it sounds like they left there dog behind instead of taking it with? ;-( Poor baby. I work with victims that lose there home and the red cross helped but they had to pay every cent back. With this said I asked about that and each victim that has to utilize red cross during a time of need had to repay that debt. I found that so very sad. These people will not have money to come for awhile after rebuildeing there lives….so sad. I just sent out care packages to NJ I wish I had more to help. But I have been clearing out my overstock and sending flat rate packages that way!!! I hope it has helped some families!!!! Thank You for sharing this.
They did take their dog, thanks goodness! It is sad, that is awesome that you sent a care package! great idea.
Staten Island boro President is blasting the Red Cross today because they are no where to seen on SI.
I lost everything in Hurricane Isaac, a single mom with children. The Red Cross literally gave me a mop and bucket….that’s it! Still trying to pick up the pieces without losing my mind….you learn who your true family us, that’s for sure….I think that’s more heart-breaking…trying to keep the children stable….ugh…Flood is the worst! In Hurricane Katrina, I had three trees through our home….I’d rather that.
