Online grocery delivery subscriptions, have you tried them? I hadn't considered it until now because I actually enjoy food shopping under normal circumstances. Due to the required social distancing, and the current lack of supply of certain items, I'm giving these subscription services a try.
My first requirement is that the food is organic and responsibly sourced. My family eats mostly a paleo diet so vegetables, fruit, and animal proteins are most important. There are a number of “meal kit” services that have grown in popularity recently. With my family's dietary restrictions and my requirement for organic food, its almost impossible to find a meal kit service that fits my needs. For those reasons, grocery delivery subscriptions interest me a lot more. After researching a few options I am trying out two companies.
Butcher Box Delivery
I've always had a hard time finding high quality organic meat in my local area. That's why this grocery delivery subscription really got my attention when a friend recommended it. The Butcher Box website explains that all of their animals are humanely raised and the meat is free of antibiotics and added hormones. The beef is 100% grass fed, chicken is free-range organic, and and pork is heritage breed. That's exactly what I needed to hear.
How it works: There are two options, the curated box or the custom box. The curated box is put together for you and the custom box you can choose your own items – $149 for six different items. The second choice is to have the box delivered every 4 or 6 weeks.
I received my first box last week and so far I'm impressed! It was packaged impeccably and everything arrived frozen. The items I've cooked so far have been delicious, it's clearly high quality.
Misfits Vegetable Subscriptions
In the Summer, I attend farmer's markets and local farms to buy organic produce but in the Winter that isn't an option. Typically, in the colder months I purchase organic produce at the grocery store but right now supply is low and trips to the store are limited.
Recently, I came across Misfits market delivery subscription and I love their mission. They have a two-pronged mission: to provide affordable access to healthy food and to fight the food waste crisis. All of the produce is certified organic and non-GMO, and sourced from hand-picked farms and partners on the East Coast and across the Americas.
How it works: This service is surprisingly very affordable. They have two options a smaller box for $22 which includes 10-13 lbs of vegetables and the larger box for $35 which includes 18-22 lbs of vegetables.
