Johnson & Johnson, the company that makes the most popular skin and personal care products for babies has been lying to us about the safety of their products for 36 years. This is an absolute outrage.
Baby Powder Linked to Ovarian Cancer
In recent news, Reuters reported that the company must pay $72 Million in damages for a cancer death linked to talcum powder, the ingredient the company's Baby Powder and Shower to Shower product. The woman in the case, Jacqueline Fox, used these two products for decades and later passed away from Ovarian Cancer. Jere Beasley, a lawyer for the plaintiff's family, said Johnson & Johnson “knew as far back as the 1980s of the risk,” and yet resorted to “lying to the public, lying to the regulatory agencies.”
Another horrifying fact stated in the article was that in October 2013, a federal jury in Sioux Falls, South Dakota found that plaintiff Deane Berg's use of Johnson & Johnson's body powder products was a factor in her developing ovarian cancer. Nothing was done about this verdict and no damages were awarded.
This is Your Wake Up Call
If you have been using personal care products and beauty products with any questionable ingredients in them, this is your wake up call. A product made and marketed for babies is not safe and the company knew about it. This is both horrifying and saddening to me. We live in a time and place where people actually make these decisions for their own financial benefit and ignore the health and safety of all mankind. It's disgraceful.
The whole and shocking truth is that we can't trust these huge corporations to provide us with safe products and trustworthy information. Now more then ever, we need to be informed consumers, investigate these ingredients, and question their blatant lies.
I do not buy any Johnson & Johnson skin care products and I hope that now you will take a good look at the products you are using. My highly controversial article, Why You Should Never Use Baby Oil, is often refuted by people who don't believe that unsafe products are sold to consumers. Is death (like the one in this court case) what it takes for consumers to wake up?
Vote with Your Wallet
Vote with your wallet, buy products from companies that are honest and transparent, not corporate liars. Support organizations like the Environmental Working Group who investigate harmful ingredients and provide trustworthy information to consumer so we can protect ourselves. By the way, I have no affiliation with this non-profit organization I just truly respect their work and I am grateful for their invaluable resources for consumers.
This case is the exact reason why I choose to use clean, pure, toxin-free products for my family. It was only a matter of time before we had some proof that some products on the market are so unsafe they could literally kill us. I pass along this information, not with the intent to enrage people, but with true concern for your health and safety and to give you the information that the women in these court cases wish they knew.
