Essential oils have become a part of my everyday life as a Mom. They have been a very important part of my natural remedies toolkit and can be very helpful for children. Many people who are new to using them wonder if it is safe to use essential oils with kids. Most oils are safe to use with children when used properly (read this if you aren't sure about the safe ways to use them).
Certain essential oils need to be diluted before they can be used topically for kids or adults but there are some oils that are safe enough that they can actually be used full strength. Using an undiluted oil is sometimes referred to as “neat” which means the oil does not require dilution for topical use for adults and children over the age of 2.
These are my top three favorite essential oils for kids. All of these oils can be used undiluted topically for children and adults.
Lavender is one of those things that works for a lot of different problems. This is why it's probably my number one favorite oil. Well, that and because it smells amazing. I frequently use lavender to calm my children. Sometimes I put a drop on the bottom of their feet before bed or a spritz their bedding with my homemade lavender mist and it helps to promote a more restful night sleep. Another trick is to calm them down with a little massage using lavender oil, I use my homemade lavender body butter or you could even use my recipe and make this lavender body lotion to use for this too.
Roman chamomile is another calming oil. On a stressful day, put a few drops of this oil along with lavender oil in a diffuser (I like this one) and you'll love the relaxing effects. This oil minimizes anxiety, irritability, and nervousness which makes it a great one to use on Sunday evenings. I always find that to be the hardest evening for my children with the end of the weekend and beginning of the school week it can bring many mixed emotions.
This oil probably isn't talked about as much as the first two I mentioned in this post but it has become one of my go-to oils for skin. Just after my son turned 2, he took a pretty bad fall on the back steps going into our house and feel directly on his face on the cement. His little nose was scraped up pretty badly. As it healed, the scar actually became a little raised and I worried it would be there long term. I started putting a drop of Helichrysum on his scar daily and it was really amazing how it was able to heal. Within a couple of months the scar was completely gone. Ever since then, I have used this oil on cuts, scars, and even rashes with great results.
