If you grow strawberries in your garden, make this healthy strawberry jam recipe. You won't regret it! Most recipes for strawberry jam are high in sugar and call for store bought pectin. This recipe is lower in sugar and does not need added pectin because one of the ingredients naturally contains pectin. Apples naturally contain pectin and adding some apple into this jam recipe you will provide all the pectin needed. You won't notice any apple flavor but it does make this jam even more delicious. Any type of apple with work – gala is a popular choice. Keep in mind that lower sugar jams may not preserve as long as a higher sugar version but it is a healthier option.
Strawberries are rich in nutrients, including vitamin C, fiber, potassium, and antioxidants so this jam is full of healthy nutrients. However, the downside of commercially grown conventional strawberries is they are loaded with harmful pesticides. If you aren't growing your own, always buy organic strawberries. Some fruits and vegetables you can get away with eating conventional but strawberries are not one of them. They are number one on EWG's dirty dozen list!
Healthy Strawberry Jam Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 lb Strawberries, tops removed
- 1/2 cup Apple, peeled and grated
- 1/2 cup Organic Sugar
- 1 tsp Lemon juice
- pinch salt
Instructions
- Weigh out strawberries, with tops removed, to get 1 pound
- Peel and grate the apple and measure to 1/2 cup
- Add all ingredients into a pot and stir together
- Turn heat on to low and gradually raise it up to medium
- Continuously stir the mixture, dissolving the sugar
- Mash the strawberries with a fork or potato masher as your are stirring
- Cook the mixture for about 40 minutes until thickened
- Remove from heat and let it cool. Spoon into a glass jar to store.

Side note – don't throw away the strawberry tops. Use them to make this strawberry top vinegar.
