I have known how to make lotion bars for quite some time but I have never made them until just recently. It is a quick project and you get a handful of lotion bars that last quite a while. Lotion bars are convenient for travel and also to keep in your purse. My favorite use for lotion bars is for my feet! It's great to use in between getting pedicures.
What is a Lotion Bar?
A lotion bar is basically a solid form of a body butter. Body butters are different from body lotion because they do not contain any water. A lotion bar (I supposed it really should be called a butter bar??? but I digress, I didn't make up the name!). The main difference is that it contains a higher percentage of wax to keep the bar solid as opposed to a butter like consistency. The wax content prevents it from melting in warmer temperatures as well.
Lotion bar recipes are all pretty similar if you look around on different sites and it is a forgiving recipe as long as you keep the ratio the same. You can use equal parts of wax, butter, and oil and use any type interchangeably. The ratio is key to achieve the right texture and hardness of the bar. I used what I had on hand which was beeswax, shea butter, and olive oil. Other options might be mango butter, cocoa butter, or oils like avocado oil, or macadamia nut oil. You can also customize the scent and medicinal qualities by using your choice of essential oils. In my first recipe I used lemon essential oil but next time I will try using thieves essential oil for extra immune support.
