How to Make Queen of Hungary Water
We have a recipe that explains easily how to make queen of Hungary water. What exactly is the Queen of Hungary Water's use? Undoubtedly, It’s an interesting story which has a few different versions.
History
Most sources say that Queen of Hungary's water dates back to sometime in the late 14th century. Evidently, It is unclear who exactly created it. A legend says someone formulated it at the command of Queen Elizabeth of Hungary.
Queen Hungary water first appeared outside of the country in 1370 when Charles V of France received some. He was famous for his love of fragrances. By the 18th century French hungry water became popular.
Medicinal Uses
Herbalists believed the preparation had medicinal uses such as helping relieve a headache, toothache, or ringing ears. Undeniably, It started to become known as a cure-all. At the time, it was made through a distillation process concentrating the ingredients which often included rosemary and wine.
In addition, Hungary water was also used to wash with. Additionally, people used it to wash one's face to prevent irritation and breakouts. Many thought it helped maintain a youthful appearance and beauty.
What is Queen of Hungary Water Made of?
Although it is called a water, it technically isn't made with water. Basically, historical recipes of the queen of Hungary water were alcohol based perfumes primarily made with rosemary. Some called for the distillation of fresh rosemary and thyme with brandy. Other preparations also included wine, lavender, mint, sage, margarine, orange, and lemon.
Modern Preparations
Generally, modern homemade recipes infuse herbs into witch hazel extract, alcohol, or vinegar. It is the same process you use to make an herbal tincture. Lastly, you will mix the finished infusion with rosewater to use as a toner. Herbalist Rosemary Gladstar has referenced this preparation in many of her books and touts its benefits for clear and useful skin.
Queen of Hungary Water Benefits & Use
Presently, herbalists use this as a facial toner because it helps to normalize the skin's ph. It gently tones skin, tightens pores, and soothes itchy or acne prone skin. Queen Hungary water is beneficial for all skin types. In particular, the recipe posted here is an infusion which helps to extract the volatile oils, flavonoids and phenyl acids which are antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.
Queen of Hungary Water Recipe
Of course, you will find quite a few variations of this recipe online. You can use several different herbs in a variety of Queen of Hungary water recipes. My recipe is Loosely based on Rosemary Gladstar's version.
- 4 part lemon balm
- 4 part chamomile
- 1 part rosemary
- 3 part calendula
- 2 part rose petal
- 2 part rose hip
- 1 part lemon peel
- 1 part sage
- 3 part comfrey root
- distilled witch hazel
- apple cider vinegar
Queen Hungary's Water Recipe
Equipment
- Glass jar
Ingredients
- 4 part lemon balm
- 4 part chamomile
- 1 part rosemary
- 3 part calendula
- 2 part rose petal
- 2 part rose hip
- 1 part lemon peel
- 1 part sage
- 3 part comfrey root
- distilled witch hazel
- apple cider vinegar
Instructions
- Fill a glass jar with the herb mixture listed. You can use a tbsp. as your "part" measurement.
- Pour apple cider vinegar over the herbs to fill the jar half way
- Fill the jar the rest of the way with distilled witch hazel extract
- Let this mixture sit for 4 weeks.
- Strain out your herbs and compost
- Pour the infusion into a jar and mix it with rosewater at a 1:1 ratio.
- Use this as a toner!
Notes
You may use all vinegar or all witch hazel in this recipe. Rosemary
Rosemary is a very hearty plant and is easy to keep alive. It is a versatile herb because it pairs well with many foods. It is also packed with health benefits like it's anti-inflammatory properties, it's believed ability to improve memory, boost your mood, and improve immune function. Rosemary grows well with little maintenance and is easily grown from cuttings. I started several plants this year from cuttings of a rosemary plant and almost all have survived. Planting rosemary may also help keep pests out of your vegetable garden. Grow rosemary as a perimeter around your vegetables or as a companion plant to help keep out unwanted guests in your vegetable garden.
Mint
Fresh mint is so delicious and smells amazing. Add a few mint leaves to your iced tea or other cold drinks for a refreshing flavor. It is also great in smoothies. Mint is a helpful digestive aid and can help to soothe headaches. If you don't want mint to take over your garden, it's best to plant it in a pot or in a small area. Mint is so easy to grow because it spreads a lot. You can even use your fresh mint to make this non-toxic household cleaning spray.
Cooking with fresh herbs is so delicious and has some great health benefits. Since the cost of fresh herbs is high, it might seem difficult to keep them in the house. Growing your own herbs is the best way to get delicious fresh herbs into your cooking without spending a fortune. It is hard to find a variety of herbs that are organically grown so when you grow your own you can control the growing conditions.

How to Make a Healing Diaper Balm

Making solves is the process of combining oils, butters, and waxes to make a soothing herbal remedy. This particular recipe contains three herbal infused oils. You can purchase these oils already infused or make them yourself. This blog post has details instructions on how to make your own heat infused herbal oils. The herbs used in this salve are calendula, St John's Wort, and comfrey. All of these herbs are very healing for the skin.
Many diaper creams include zinc. This recipe calls for the addition of non-nano zinc oxide powder. Zinc is part of the healing power of this diaper balm and it also helps stick to the skin and make a thick coating. The recipe also calls for lavender essential oil which is both good for the skin and has a soothing pleasant scent.
The first step is to make your herbal infused oils. These oils can be made by soaking the herbs in oil for 6 weeks. If you would like the oil to be ready sooner you can use heat to infuse the oil. Both avocado oil and olive oil are good choices for these infused oils.
Using the heat infused herbal oil method you can mix all three herbs together in oil and Infuse it specifically for this recipe. How to Make a Healing Diaper Balm
- In a saucepan, for 1/3 of a cup of olive oil or avocado oil.
- Add 1 tablespoon dried calendula flowers, 1 tablespoon dried St John's Wort and 1 tablespoon dried comfrey.
- Warm this oil on low heat for at least 2 hours, longer is better if you can.
- Once your infusion time is up you will strain the herbs out of the oil and now you have an herbal infused oil.
- Pour this oil into a mason jar.
- Add 2 tablespoons of beeswax and place the Mason jar in a double boiler to melt the wax.
- Once it is melted, add 1 teaspoon zinc oxide powder and 20 drops of lavender essential oil.
- Whisk together until you have a smooth consistency.
- Pour this into a tin or jar to cool.
Now you have a healing diaper balm for your baby that is healthy and has no harmful ingredients.
Healing Diaper Balm
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup olive oil or avocado oil

- 1 tbsp st johns wort
- 1 tbsp comfrey
- 2 tbsp beeswax
- 1 tsp zinc oxide powder
- 20 drops lavender essential oil
