Homemade Mask for Glowing Skin
Category: Natural Skin CareWe have a homemade mask for glowing skin you will want to try. You don't need expensive facials and spa treatments to have glowing skin everyday. What really makes a difference is your daily practice of taking care of your skin. Create daily habits that are healthy for your skin and your body with intention.
Tips for Brighter Skin
Exfoliate
If you don't exfoliate already, you should. Removing dead and dry skin cells allows your skin to soak up moisturizers better and keep skin hydrated and healthy. This can be as simple as using a warm cloth to gently exfoliate your skin or you can use (one of my favorites) a konjac sponge. It is a very gentle way to manually exfoliate on a daily basis.
Another option is to use a chemical exfoliating face wash that contains salicylic or glycolic acid. These work by breaking down oils to remove dead skin and help prevent breakouts. The problem is that it's very hard to find a face wash that has these ingredients and is also safe to use. Always check your products on the Skin Deep Database and look for a rating of 1 or 2.
Detox with a Homemade Mask for Glowing Skin
There are easy ways to detox your skin at home. Here's where a homemade mask for glowing skin comes in. Face masks including ingredients like activated charcoal or bentonite clay are great options. It's also easy to mix your own if you purchase these ingredients and mix them with honey or coconut oil.
If you enjoy baths, get a whole body skin detox by adding clay or epsom slats to a warm bath. It's great when you are fighting off a cold or just feeling tired and sluggish.
Homemade Mask for Glowing Skin
Ingredients
- 1 tsp Bentonite Clay
- 1 tsp White Willow Powder
- 2 tsp Water or Herbal Tea (hibiscus or chamomile work well)
- 1 tbsp Honey
- 2-4 drops Lavender essential oil
Instructions
- Measure each ingredient and pour into a small bowl
- Mix together using a small spoon
- Once fully combined it is ready to use
Moisturize
Moisturizing is important, it will be even more nourishing if you apply after exfoliation and using a detox mask. There are so many options available, I prefer simple moisturizers with natural oils and beeswax. Try Renewing Facial Serum for a light and nourishing facial oil. If you have acne scars and there are some nourishing oils that can help reduce them.
Diet
This topic can't be left out when your goal is healthy glowing skin. Our food is such an important part of our overall health and it has a huge effect on how our skin looks. Eat a diet full of organic vegetables and responsibly sourced animal products. Eating a diet low in grains and refined carbohydrates also helps to keep skin looking its best.
If you have a juicer, green juices are amazing for your skin. The concentrated source of vitamins and minerals give skin that extra glow. My favorite is this omega juicer, it works well and the juice will last up to 72 hours so you can make a bigger batch at once.
An overall healthy diet will not only give you glowing skin but overall better health, more energy, and a stronger immune system.

Healthy Strawberry Jam Recipe
Category: Real FoodIf you grow strawberries in your garden, make this healthy strawberry jam recipe. You won't regret it! Most recipes for strawberry jam are high in sugar and call for store bought pectin. This recipe is lower in sugar and does not need added pectin because one of the ingredients naturally contains pectin. Apples naturally contain pectin and adding some apple into this jam recipe you will provide all the pectin needed. You won't notice any apple flavor but it does make this jam even more delicious. Any type of apple with work – gala is a popular choice. Keep in mind that lower sugar jams may not preserve as long as a higher sugar version but it is a healthier option.
Strawberries are rich in nutrients, including vitamin C, fiber, potassium, and antioxidants so this jam is full of healthy nutrients. However, the downside of commercially grown conventional strawberries is they are loaded with harmful pesticides. If you aren't growing your own, always buy organic strawberries. Some fruits and vegetables you can get away with eating conventional but strawberries are not one of them. They are number one on EWG's dirty dozen list!

Why You Should Never Use Baby Oil
Category: Natural Skin CareNever use baby oil. It is made of mineral oil which is completely foreign to the human body. It is a synthetic oil which is a byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. Wait, gasoline? crude oil? Why do we slather this stuff all over our children? Well, mostly because its cheap and abundant so manufacturers sell it to us and tell us it's good for our skin.
Why is Mineral Oil Bad?
The honest truth is baby oil is actually harmful to our health. Mineral oil acts as a thin layer on the skin. It is difficult to absorb and clogs the pores, which slows the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins. Our skin plays a large role in the body's detoxification through sweat. If pores are blocked, the toxins remain in the body for a longer period of time. This alone can be harmful. Additionally, if mineral oil is ingested, it is broken down by the liver and passes through the intestinal tract. Once in the intestines, mineral oil can absorb all of the fat-soluble vitamins found there. So all those organic foods and vitamin supplements you spend all your money on will get robbed by mineral oil and your body never gets the benefits.
There are claims that mineral oil can cause damage to the lungs, nervous system, skin, and even causes premature aging. An unbiased study released by the Cancer Prevention Coalition in June 2002, contained the following: “Cancer and health experts just concluded reviews that indicate mainstream cosmetics and personal hygiene products including lotions, soaps and shampoos, pose the highest risk exposures to the general public.”
Obviously, it is clear that mineral oil and petrochemicals have no place in skin care products and should never be used on babies or adults. Unfortunately, baby oil isn't the only thing we need to be concerned about either. There are thousands of unsafe chemicals being used in personal care products that have never been tested for safety.
What should you use instead of baby oil?
There are so many amazing and natural oils that you can use in place of mineral oil or petroleum containing lotions. Some of my favorites are:
- Coconut oil
- Olive oil (you can even infuse it with herbs like calendula)
- Shea butter
- Pure Body Butters – like this one
It is not hard to replace products you already use with better healthy products. When you start using natural organic oils and lotions you will see how much better they work. You can even add a few drops of essential oils into Coconut oil or olive oil to use it as a moisturizer or massage oil. A nice relaxing oil to add for children is lavender. Apply a little coconut oil with lavender before bed to make bedtime a little more relaxing.
